A teacher with long, dark brown locks was waiting for the students at the top of the stairs, restlessly tapping long, manicured fingers along the staircase railings. When the students began to approach the top of the stairwell, she turned towards them. Her dark, wavy hair swishing to the side.
The first-year students raced up the steps towards her, crowding in front of her to make their way in through the doors of the dining hall. She raised her hand to silence them before speaking.
“Welcome to Hogwarts,” she greeted, her voice loud and clear. “Now, in a few moments, you will pass through these doors to join your classmates. But before you can take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses.”
Howon looked at his new found friend who only shrugged at him, the same confused expression mirrored on his face.
“There are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.” A small boy near the back of the room smirked at the mention of the house he was confident in being placed in. His platinum blonde hair bobbing as he nodded at his two friends.
“Now, while you are here, your house will be like your family. Your triumphs will earn you points; any rule-breaking, and you will lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points will be awarded the House Cup.”
The young looking professor glanced around the room, as if prompting students for questions, but was met with silence. And croaking.
A student with flaming red hair raced up to the front of the steps, near the professor’s feet. “B-Bomb!” he cried, gathering the dark amphibian in his hands. The students, as well as the woman at the steps, stared at him as he walked back to the group of first year students. “Sorry.”
“The sorting ceremony will being momentarily.” As soon as she said so, her figure turned back and she started to walk away from the crowd. There was a moment of silence before it was broken by a blonde-haired man from the back.
“So, it’s true then, what they were saying on the train,” He raised his voice, stopping for a moment with a rather smug look on his face. “Lee Howon has come to Hogwarts.”
There was a moment of hushed muffled sounds, students talking amongst themselves.
“This is Hara. And Minah,” he nodded to the two girls next to him before standing up, walking over to Howon. “And I’m Sungjong. Lee Sungjong.” Woohyun tried not to laugh.
Sungjong glared at him. “Think my name funny, do you? No need to ask for yours,” he spat. Examining the dark haired boy from head to toe. “Tacky clothing and hand-me-down books. You must be another one of those adopted children everyone was talking about.” Woohyun stared at his shoes, unable to come up with anything to say back to the sharp-tongued girly boy.
He turned back to Howon, “You’ll soon find out that some wizards are better than others, Howon. You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort,” he turned, his heated gaze was directed at Woohyun, spitting the words out like venom.
“I, can help with that.” The platinum-haired boy stuck his hand out, offering a handshake. Howon looks down, staring at Sungjong’s hand for a split second before catching the boy’s eyes again.
“I think I can tell the wrong sort by myself, thanks.” Sungjong sneered at him, about to draw out his wand before the Professor came out again, tapping him on the shoulder. The young blonde turned around reflexively.
He gave Howon the evil eye before he went back to his friends. The professor and Howon watched him for a moment. She turned back to the rest of the new wizards with a bright smile.
“We’re ready for you now. Follow me.”
The new students were led into the large dining hall where hundreds upon hundreds of older Hogwarts students resided, sitting around and waiting for the results of the Sorting Ceremony. The youngest batch of Hogwarts students marveled at the eerie beauty of the inner building.
The hall was rather noisy, older students staring at the younger students and discussing their first impressions of them or just chatting with one another in general. There was something that couldn’t escape Howon’s ears though. He could hear sounds from being him, ‘coo’-ing sounds, to be precise.
He turned back, surprised to see the tall boy from before – Wasn’t his name, Sung-something? – jumping about, with his hands out-stretched and he looked like as if he was trying to reach out for the ceiling above, which looked like the night sky. The boy immediately noticed his stare, pulling his hand back down. “What?”
Howon shook his head, slightly baffled.
“Gather here, if you please,” the Professor requested, waving the students forward. a small scroll in her hands. “Now, before we begin, Professor Sunggyu would like to say a few words.”
The man sitting in the middle of the staff’s quarters of the dining hall stood up. “I have a few thart of term notithes I’d withed to announth.” A few of the younger students laughed before a female professor sitting by the headmaster hushed them. Casting a small spell on the speaker.
“Thank you,” he said to the professor. “The first years, please note, that the Dark Forest is strictly forbidden to all students,” he continued, his lisp gone.
“And our caretaker has asked me to remind you that the third floor corridor on the righthand side is out of bounds to anyone who does not wish to die a most painful death.”
Woohyun leaned over to whisper in Howon’s ear. “I’ve heard that many people were caught snogging in that room. And that two of the professors were seen in that room, too!” Howon involuntarily shuddered at the thought.
“Now, Professor Gyuri, if you please.”
The professor standing in front of the young wizards and witches cleared her throat, unrolling the scroll in her hand. “When I call your name, you shall come forth. I will put the Sorting Hat on your head. And you will be placed into your houses.” She looked at the long list of names. “Kim Yookwon”
A chubby faced boy walked up the stairs nervously. His fingers curling in his lap when he sat down. Biting his lower lip as the Hat was placed on his head.
“Hufflepuff!” the dark, old hat announced after a short moment. Yookwon jumped in the seat before smiling in relief. Walking off the stage to join the table of wizards and witches waving him towards them.
The platinum blonde strode up to the stage arrogantly, nose in the air. The hat didn’t even make it onto his head when it placed him in Slytherin. He smirked, proud to have made it into the house his father had been in when he attended the school.
A petite girl walked up to the stage. Anticipation clear across her face. He looked over at Woohyun who was staring at the pretty girl in a lovesick manner as she sat. Hands in lap. Smiling up at the hat nervously. He turned back to the girl in time to catch that she was sorted into the Hufflepuff house.
Upon hearing the name, he turned back to his new friend (who was still staring at the pretty, newly annointed Hufflepuff). Professor Gyuri called his name again, looking amongst the group before her. Howon nudged him in the side to get him back to his senses.
“Stop ogling at her!”
“What? She’s pretty!” he whispered harshly.
Howon rolled his eyes. “They just called for you, you creep! Get up there,” he informed, pushing the older boy up to the front.
Professor Gyuri narrowed her eyes at him for a moment before placing the Sorting Hat on his head. Making loud ‘hmm’-ing sounds as it contemplated which group he would be placed in. Making up its mind, he loudly declared, “Ravenclaw”
Howon watched the boy he met on the train walk up the stairs, their shoulders brushing slightly. Sitting down, he exhaled, forcing himself to calm down when the Hat hovered above his head. Almost immediately declaring “Ravenclaw”.
The entire room was suddenly quiet. Gasps resounding through the large dining halls. Even Headmaster Sunggyu looked interested in the house that the infamous Lee Howon was going to be put in. The Sorting Hat sat on his head for a reasonably long time. Weighing the young wizard’s exceptional qualities that would have made him a fine addition to any house he would be placed in, but ultimately decided “Ravenclaw”. (due to Howon’s request to be put in any house, as long as it wasn’t the Slytherin house at any rate.)
The Ravenclaw table cheered rambunctiously. Most of the students in the house giving the well-known wizard a standing ovation. The prefect of the house greeting him with a warm smile and a handshake as he approached the table.
The sorting ceremony continued like this for another half-hour. Howon squinted at the other first-years. Most of them had the general ‘oh my gosh-i’m going to be a wizard-what do i do’ expressions on their faces.
He narrowed his eyes at one young wizard who was sorted into the Slytherin house. He noticed that the wizard had not been able to keep his eyes off of the Ravenclaw sitting next to him, chewing slowly on his mashed potatoes as he marveled at the bewitched ceiling.
Sungyeol smiled up at the ‘night sky’. His eyes shining under the candle lights. This was going to be his home for the next school year. This was where he would learn about his ancestors. Where he was going to shed his former title of being a ‘freak’ at his old school. Where he’d finally let go of his ‘choding’ title.
He was so busy with his thoughts, he missed the way three pairs of eyes were on him.
